CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Welcome
The fortieth SICE Annual Conference (SICE2001) is sponsored by the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) of Japan in cooperation with the Industrial Electronics Society of the IEEE (IEEE/IES), the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE/RAS), the IEEE Control Systems Society (IEEE/CSS), the Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society (ISA) and in association with the IEEE Japan Council, the Institute of Control, Automation and Systems Engineers (ICASE), the Chinese Automatic Control Society (CAC) and the China Instrument Society (CIS).
The conference Steering Committee and the Program Committee of SICE2001 would like to invite you to participate in this annual event of our society. The conference will be a major opportunity to exchange and express ideas on the latest developments in the theory and application of measurement, control, system and information technologies.
The conference will be held at School of Engineering, Nagoya University, Nagoya in Japan. Nagoya is located at the heart of central Japan, which is blessed with a rich natural environment. Some of the scenic areas of the region include Ise Bay. Nobi Plane, and Kiso River. As the nucleus of this central area, Nagoya, with its population of more than 2.15 million, is one of Japan's major cities, and an important industrial and cultural center. In the city, you can enjoy the sightseeing at The Nagoya Castle, famous for the golden dolphins adorning its rooftop, the Tokugawa Art Museum, the Atsuta Shrine and many other places. Nagoya is also actively preparing for a future in which lifestyle, technology, and culture work together to create a harmonious environment.
The conference will give you an opportunity to meet the specialists in the field of control and measurement, who are working on the frontiers of academic research and are striving towards the development of new technology in the industry.

Conference Registration
Advance registration is highly recommended. Those who wish to attend the SICE2001 Conference should complete the registration form(PDF) and return it to:

Your remittance for all costs must accompany your registration form. Payment should be made in Japanese yen by bank draft, money order, or your international credit card. To take advantage of the reduced registration fees, advanced registration must be received by June 30, 2001. The registration fee schedule is as follows. All fees are quoted in Japanese Yen.
The registration fee includes attendance at all technical sessions, neither a copy of the conference proceedings nor a ticket to the banquet. It is expected that at least one author per paper will have registered by June 30, 2001. This will allow the Conference Steering Committee and the Program Committee to run and host the technical program with minimum disruption.

All attendees must register and wear the conference badges provided for them. A registration package containing all needed materials will be given to each attendee at the conference registration desk. The registration desk will be open for on-site registration and other registration matters during the conference. Registration fees may be refunded in full if a written request is received by the SICE2001 Secretariat no later than June 30, 2001. No refunds will be made after that date.

Conference Proceedings
The conference proceedings(CD-ROM) will include all the technical papers presented at the SICE2001. During the conference, all attendees may have the CD-ROM by paying a modest fee to the address specified, in advance.

Reception and Dinner Party
There will be a Reception for all conference attendees and their accompanying guests on Tuesday, July 24 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in a restaurant "Hananoki" in Nagoya University campus. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
A conference dinner party will be held in Nagoya Garden Palace Hotel on Thursday, July 26, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Party tickets may be preordered using the Registration Form or can be purchased at the Registration Desk. Advance registration is highly recommended. Accompanying persons are invited without tickets. Nagoya Garden Palace Hotel is located in midtown Nagoya, "Nishiki-3-cyome" Sakae. Shuttle bus service will be arranged for transportation from the conference venue to Nagoya Garden Palace Hotel.

Technical Tour
On Thursday July 26, from 9:00 to 16:30, a Technical Tour has been arranged to visit Nippon Steel Corporation Nagoya Works and Toyota Motor Corporation. At Nippon Steel Corporation Nagoya Works, the participants would experience the operation system of Blast Furnace which has been constructed last year. In addition, the participants also would be explained about an Electric Vehicle ( e-com ) and Fuel Cell Charge Station at Toyota Motor Corporation.
The cost will be 3,000Yen including lunch. Since the number of participants on the tour would be limited to 50, reservation and payment in advance are strongly suggested. Participants are requested to gather 10 minutes prior to the nominated departure time.

Social Tour
A full day tour has been arranged on Thursday, July 26, from 10:30 to 16:30, for accompanying guests. This tour has been arranged to visit Nagoyan Cuisine Restaurant "Atsuta, Horai-Jinya", Tokugawa Art Museum, and Nagoya Brewery, Asahi Breweries Limited. Horai-Jinya would serve a famous Nagoyan cuisine "Hitsumabushi (Nagoyan style bowl of broiled eels and rice)". Tokugawa Art Museum possesses over ten thousand historic treasures of the Tokugawa Family in the Edo era, known as "Daimyo dogu". Nagoya Brewery produces Japanese popular dry beer "Asahi Super Dry". You can enjoy tasting fresh draft beers toward the end of the tour.
The cost will be 4,000Yen including lunch and number of participants on the tour would be limited to 50. Please make sure of the meeting place at SICE2001 Registration Desk in advance, participants are requested to gather 10 minutes prior to the nominated departure time at Nagoya University.

Welcome Party for Students
A party for students will be held on Wednesday, July 25 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at Room N141 on the 4th floor of Building No.1, School of Eng., Nagoya University. The host is SICE president and students will be able to communicate with him directly. Drinks and snacks will be served.

Hotel Information
Participants will be accommodated in the following hotels of different categories. Kinki Nippon Tourist Co. Ltd. is appointed as the official travel agency for the conference and will handle all related travel arrangements and hotel accommodation. Any inquiries concerning the arrangements should be mailed directly to SICE Help Desk, Kinki Nippon Tourist Co. Ltd.

Payment:
Payment must be made in Japanese Yen by Credit Card (VISA, Master Card, Amex, Diners) by filling in the necessary items on the Reservation Form. Bank Draft and Personal checks are NOT acceptable.

Reservation:
  1. Fill in the enclosed Reservation Form. Specify the hotel, the category and the check-in/check-out dates, with the payment of the deposit.
  2. Send the Form to SICE Help Desk by mail or FAX, not later than 25 June, 2001.

Transportation

Passport and Visas
All foreign visitors entering Japan must have a valid passport. Japanese visas are required for tourists except those of certain citizenry. The Conference Steering Committee would like to remind attendees residing as aliens in foreign countries that their visa requirements are based on the countries of which they are citizens, not on the countries in which they are currently residing. It is responsibility of all attendees to obtain all necessary documents for entry into Japan from their nearest Japanese embassy or consulate.
