CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Welcome
The thirty-ninth SICE Annual Conference (SICE2000) is sponsored by the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) of Japan, technical cosponsored by the Industrial Electronics Society of theIEEE (IEEE/IES), the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE/RAS), the IEEE Control Systems Society (IEEE/CSS) and the International Society for Measurement and Control (ISA) and in cooperation with the IEEE Japan Council, the Institute of Control, Automation and Systems Engineers (ICASE), the Chinese Automatic Control Society (CAC), the China Instrument Society (CIS) and the Association of Instrumentation Engineers of Japan (AIE).
The conference Steering Committee and the Program Committee of SICE invite you to participate in this annual event of our society. The conference will be a major opportunity to exchange and express ideas on the latest developments in the theory and application of measurement, control, system and information technologies.
The conference will be held at Kyushu Institute of Technology, Faculty of Computer Science and Systems Engineering in Iizuka city, Fukuoka prefecture, Kyushu in Japan. Iizuka is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains located on the middle area of Ongagawa river. It has a proud of long history with oldest origin of town naming by Empress Jingu, and has several historical places with traditional cultures. It also has been known as a coal production area until 1945. Recently Iizuka has changed its feature to an academic town with advanced research facilities including Kyushu Institute of Technology established in 1987. Since Iizuka is a small town, there are not enough hotels in the city for all participants, instead, transportation to access from Fukuoka city to the conference site is well arranged by the steering committee. The conference will give you an opportunity to meet the specialists in the eld of control and measurement, who are working on the frontiers of academic research and are striving towards the development of new technology in the industry.

Your remittance for all costs must accompany your registration form. Payment should be made in Japanese yen by bank draft, money order, or your international credit card.
To take advantage of the reduced registration fees, advanced registration must be received by June 30, 2000.
The registration fee schedule is as follows. All fees are quoted in Japanese Yen. The registration fee includes attendance at all technical sessions, but does not include a copy of the conference proceedings nor a ticket to the banquet. It is expected that at least one author per paper will have registered by June 30, 2000. This will allow the Conference Steering Committee and the Program Committee to run and host the technical program with minimum disruption.

All attendees must register and wear the conference badges provided for them. A registration package containing all needed materials will be given to each attendee at the conference registration desk. The registration desk will be open for on-site registration and other registration matters during the conference. Registration fees may be refunded in full if a written request is received by the SICE2000 Secretariat no later than June 30, 2000. No refunds will be made after that date.

Conference Proceedings
The conference proceedings(CD-ROM) will include all the technical papers presented at the SICE2000. During the conference, all attendees may have the CD-ROM by paying a modest fee to the address speci ed, in advance.
Reception and Banquet There will be a Reception for all conference attendees and their accompanying guests on Tuesday, July 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in a restaurant `Be COSMOS' at Iizuka R&D Center. Complimentary refreshments will be served. Iizuka R&D Center is situated just in front of the conference venue.
A Banquet will take place on Thursday, July 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Nogami President Hotel, in the style of a standup party. Banquet tickets may be preordered using the Registration Form, and they may also be purchased at the Registration Desk subject to availability. Advance registration is highly recommended. It saves you money, and it prevents lack of available tickets, food and drink. Accompanying guests and families are invited without tickets. Nogami President Hotel is located in downtown Iizuka, about 2 km from the conference venue. Shuttle bus service will be arranged by courtesy for transportation from the conference venue to Nogami President Hotel, and from Nogami President Hotel to JR Hakata Station, according to the opening and the closing of the Banquet.

Technical Tour
On Thursday July 27, from 9:15 to 17:00, a technical tour is planned to visit Yaskawa Electric Corporation MOTOMAN Center and Kitakyushu City Kogasaki Plant. At the MOTOMAN Center, you can be seen a production process of industrial robots. The Kogasaki Plant has the largest combined gas turbine repowering type waste power generation system in Japan. The cost is 3,000Yen including lunch. Since the number of participants on the tour will be limited to 40, booking and payment inadvance are strongly suggested. Participants are requested to gather in front of the main gate of campus, 10 minutes prior to the nominated departure time.

Social Tour
A full day tour is arranged on Thursday, July 27, from 8:30 to 17:30, for accompanying persons. This tour has been arranged to visit Yanagawa City and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. In Yanagawa, visitors are able to enjoy the 70-minutes boat ride down a canal. By the boarding area, there is a literary monument honoring the poet, Hakushu Kitahara. Dazaifu Tenmangu is the head shrine of the Tenmangu shrines of Japan which enshrine Michizane of Sugawara as the "deity of academics". The treasury museum explains about the history of Michizane and Dazaifu.
The cost is 3,000Yen including lunch. A boat ride in Yanagawa is optional, which costs extra 1,500Yen. The number of participants on the tour will be limited to 40. Participants are requested to gather in front of the Nogami President Hotel in Iizuka 10 minutes prior to the nominated departure time.
Pick-up service is available at JR Hakata Station 9:30 am.

Hotel Information
The participants should make hotel reservation for oneself. A block of rooms in the following hotels has been reserved for the participants and their families. Please read the following conditions below very carefully. After filling out the application form(PDF), please send it directly to the Nippon Travel Agency, Fukuoka Branch Office by fax.

Conditions:

  1. Please note the hotel of your choice on your application.
    The SICE200 Secretariat and the steering committee do not deal with the hotel accomodations.
  2. Please fill out every line of the form completely.
  3. The dead-line to apply is June 23, 2000. After that time, the rooms will become available to other costumers.
    Once full capacity is reached, you will not be able to make reservations, so it is advisable to send in your application as soon as possible.

If you get the confirmation and the bill of reservation, please check the price and pay for it until July 14, 2000. The price includes a commission of 500Yen.

Passport and Visas
All foreign visitors entering Japan must have avalid passport. Japanese visas are required for tourists except those of certain citizenry. The Conference Steering Committee would like to remind attendees residing as aliens in foreign countries that their visa requirements are based on the countries of which they are citizens, not on the countries in which they are currently residing. It is the responsibility of all attendees to obtain all necessary documents for entry into Japan from their nearest Japanese embassy or consulate.
