Welcome to SICE Annual Conference 2004 in Sapporo

General Chair of the Conference
Ryoji OHBA

It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome you to the SICE Annual Conference 2004 in Sapporo (SICE 2004 in Sapporo) on behalf of the organizing committee of the conference. The conference is to be held on 4-6, August 2004 at the Hokkaido Institute of Technology, Teine-ku, Sapporo, Japan.

This conference is its third internationalized annual conference after Osaka 2002 and Fukui 2003, and it corresponds to the 43rd SICE Annual Conference. Conference theme is rather broad and covers most technical fields relating instrumentation, system and control engineering from basic theoretical researches to practical engineering applications. Some examples of the topics can be seen on the call for papers, but not restricted to them. The conference is to be planned to have not only ordinary sessions in both oral and poster presentations but also many organized sessions concerning various contemporary topical themes. It is expected that more than 700 papers are published with CD-ROM and more than thousand participants attend to the conference. I would like to give a warm welcome to all of those who are interested in the theme to SICE 2004 in Sapporo.

Sapporo is located in the Hokkaido Island, northern part of Japan. Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido prefecture, which has a population of over 1.8 million. It has rather short history in comparison with the other principal cities in southern districts of Japan. It only started to be constructed at the early Meiji era (about 130 years ago). But its development is remarkable and it hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1972. Now it is fifth largest city in Japan. It has a cool and dry summer season unlike other cities in more southern districts in Japan and it will be pleasant climate at the conference period.

Sapporo is a beautiful, modern and lively town. By attending the SICE 2004, you may enjoy not only exchange of scientific/technical information between colleagues and old friends but also lively town of Sapporo.

See you coming summer in SICE 2004 in Sapporo!
